I am a National Board Certified elementary school teacher, author, and speaker in Santa Monica, CA. I have written several books for educators and parents, including Changing Kids’ Lives One Quote at a Time and Eight Essentials for Empowered Teaching and Learning, K-8. I am also the creator of the Chase Manning Mystery Series for kids 8-12. Each book in the series features a single-day, real-time thriller that occurs on an elementary school campus. Changing Kids’ Lives One Quote at a Time is a book for parents and teachers that contains 121 inspirational sayings designed to bring out the best in children and develop lasting habits of character. Accompanying each quote is a set of “talking points” that parents and teachers can use as a reference to draw full meaning from each saying. The topic of character education has been a passion of mine since I began teaching in 1994, and I have always tried to develop great students who are also great people. In these times, when bullying poses such a serious problem in our schools and character-building efforts are so desperately needed, I feel this book has great potential to make a positive difference in our society.
Chase Against Time is the first installment in my Chase Manning Mystery Series for kids 8-12. Each book in the series features a single-day, real-time thriller that occurs on an elementary school campus. Over the past few years I have written the first four books in the series and self-published the first two. I did everything I could to promote my books locally, but I never stopped searching for a national publisher. This past January I received a big break when I signed with Brown Books in Dallas, TX. The book will be released March 15th. As a teacher, the cause of literacy is near and dear to my heart, and I am confident the book’s fast-paced, suspenseful nature will resonate with both boys and girls, while the kid-friendly, positive tone will appeal to parents and teachers. It is my understanding that many 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students have difficulty finding appealing books at their levels, and I believe that this book can help fill this void. Chase Against Time is a 5.2 level book on the Accelerated Reader scale and a level Q on the Fountas and Pinnell scale.

Thank you for featuring me as this week’s “Featured Teacher”. I appreciate it very, very much!
You are very welcome. You deserve it!
Very nice, Ellen H! I would love to know more about that bottom picture. What are the kids working on?
The kids were using alphabet stamps to make words in playdough. I was using this to help reinforce word recognition as well as develop their fine motor muscle strength.
I am a huge fan of DonorsChoose. I have had 4 projects sponsored so far, amazing group of people! I like the idea of getting people to donate a little. My last project my husband donated $10 and got the ball rolling! Keep up the good work fellow NYer!
Nice article and great organization!
