Estimation of Birth Weight Graph- Math lesson on graphing, weight, estimation for elementary

Submitted by Jenny S.

“When I Was Born I weighed About…”

My 2nd graders were studying weight and capacity.  They also had to estimate weights.  With a quick note going home to parents explaining what we were doing in math, I asked them to write their child’s birth weight down.  In class we looked at the weights and decided where we should put their names on the graph. Was their weight closest to 5 lbs or 6 lbs. for example.  Once the graph was complete, we discussed the data and I asked questions such as: Which weight represents most of the students in this class?  How many more students weighed about 6 pounds than about 7 pounds? etc.
