Winter Writing Prompts- writing ideas for all ages

* Adventures of the Lost Mitten- have students write about a lost mitten…from the mitten’s point of view.

* Write an acrostic poem for the word “WINTER”.

*Your parents say you are moving.  When you get there, you discover your new home is an igloo. What is your reaction? How do you feel about this?  Describe your new home. How is your new igloo home different from your old home? How is it the same?

* Describe snow to someone who has never seen it in person.  Think about the 5 senses when you are writing your description.

*Write step-by-step directions for building a snowman.  Include a picture.

* Write about your favorite things to do/play in the snow.

*Read the majority of a favorite winter book to your students, and have them write the ending.

*You will never guess happened when I built a snowman in my yard…….

*What winter sport do you like best and why?  Come up with a class list of winter sports first.

*What winter activity/sport would you like to learn to do and why?- brainstorm ideas before writing.

*You are at school on Friday afternoon when a blizzard suddenly and without warning begins.  The roads are shut down, and walking out in the blizzard is too dangerous. You are stranded at school for  2 full days.  Describe your weekend of being stranded at school. Consider things such as: food, sleeping, activities to pass the time.
